Romantic quotes from films – The reckoning

Is that a list of romantic quotes in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?

Romantic quote: “When they ask me what I liked best, I’ll say it was you.”
Quote Notes: Use it if your lover is about to perish in the next 5 minutes. You’re not, though. Just them.. Don’t worry about trying to save them. Just use this quote to give the rest of their life some meaning. Never specify who ‘they’ refers to.
Film: City of Angels

Romantic quote: “I have crossed oceans of time to find you.”
Quote Notes: Crossing oceans of time shows a jolly firm post-Einsteinian grasp of physics. Say this to the right man or woman (and be prepared to explain exactly what you mean by it, which is the hard bit) and they will stroke your arm with fervour!
Film: Dracula

Romantic quote: “Happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat.”
Romantic quote: “I am just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.”
Quote Notes: Hooray for romantic comedies! Exchange ‘girl’ and ‘boy’ for nouns of your choice. Or indeed exchange ‘love’ for a different verb. End up with your version of “I am just a thing standing in front of a thing asking them to thing”.
Film: Notting Hill

Romantic quote: “Soul mates. It’s extremely rare, but it exists. It’s sort of like twin souls tuned into each other.”
Quote Notes: Hahahahahaha. Was the humour here intentional? It’s hard to say without having seen the film. Hahahahahaha.
Film: What Dreams May Come

Romantic quote: “Make of our hands one hand. Make of our hearts one heart. Make of our vows one last vow. Only death will part us now.”
Quote Notes: Stalky AND overly possessive. Most excellent.
Film: West Side Story

Romantic quote: “I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you”.
Quote Notes: Best said to your bank teller. They’ll remember you. Oh, how they’ll remember you.
Film: Dirty Dancing

Romantic quote: “I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.”
Quote Notes: Best said if you are a pint-sized gardener by profession. And your patron is of equally small stature. And you want to run your hammy fingers through their curly black hair.
Film: Lord of the Rings

Romantic quote: “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”
Quote Notes: True love is learning the whole of the Princess Bride by heart and quoting it to your dear heart over the process of several hours. Make it happen!
Film: Princess Bride

Romantic quote: “You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.”
Quote Notes: Grr. Tiger.
Film: Gone With the Wind

Romantic quote: “You had me at hello.”
Quote Notes: You may hate yourself… But you will use it at some point. Or a variation of it. Face it – a film starring Tom Cruise has changed your life.
Film: Jerry MacGuire

Romantic quote: “When we are married, will you dance with me? I find dancing very agreeable. Why can you not say what is in your head?”
Quote Notes: Somewhere between sociopathy and Asperger’s. With romantic lines like these, you’ll win some, you’ll lose some. Well… If we’re being honest, you’ll lose some.
Film: The Village

Romantic quote: “We will always have Paris.”
Quote Notes: Interchange for the shared location of your choice. Works well if you have both spent a day in Licky End (just off the M42) or Slough.
Film: Casablanca
