Captain America: The Winter Soldier gets macho new trailer

Well, this is interesting. The first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier landed a couple of days ago, and – while it doesn’t necessarily look good – it is at least different. With much of the criticism levelled at Thor: The Dark World (look out for our review tomorrow) picking up on its increasingly generic ‘strong-good-guy-and-loads-of-crap-baddies’ mechanics, The Winter Soldier certainly seems to be taking things in a different direction – to the extent that it doesn’t really look like a superhero film at all.

Here, have a look:

See what we mean? I’ve got jackets more garish than Cap’s new uniform, although he spends half the trailer in mufti anyway, and despite a few flashes of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier (didn’t that get blown up in Avengers Assemble?) this is basically two and a half minutes of Chris Evans giving Robert Redford hard looks. It’s like an FBI film from about 1993 – all ominous militarisation and surveillance programmes – but with occasional flashes of Sebastian Shan’s slightly fey Winter Soldier and Anthony Mackie in a wingsuit, neatly making up for the fact that he was virtually the only A-list African American actor under 40 who didn’t get cast in Red Tails. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson’s new hair is awful.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on our screens on March 28th next year. Are you excited?
