Still good, though.

With only seven weeks until the release of young adult gladiatorial dystopian thriller The Hunger Games (try saying that with a mouthful of Jennifer Lawrence), what’s being called “the final trailer” has been released. And it’s… scarcely different from the last trailer, to be quite honest.

A lot of the shots are exactly the same – the bit at the Reaping, where Lawrence replaces her sister as Tribute, is much as it was, although we get to see her passing over the medallion which is also the film’s logo. Then it’s just a couple more training montages, a sparkly dress and we’re off!

…yep. That’s it. Don’t get us wrong, we like the trailer a lot – it’s just so similar to the one from November or whenever. We’re hoping that there’s so little new footage because any more would risk spectacular spoilers!

Will you be seeing The Hunger Games? Let us know below!

Except he isn't called Mos Def any more.

Writer-director Dan Schechter is adapting Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch – and Oscar nominee John Hawkes (Martha Marcy May Marlene) is to play the character made famous by Robert DeNiro in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown.

1997′s Jackie Brown, starring DeNiro and Samuel L Jackson (alongside Pam Grier, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda and Michael Keaton), was adapted by Tarantino from Leonard’s novel Rum Punch. Switch, which is set fifteen years before the events of Rum Punch, features DeNiro’s old character Louis Gara, a career criminal, and Jackson’s gun runner Ordell Robbie. Yasiin Bey (who apparently doesn’t want to be called Mos Def any more) is to take over the role of Robbie in Schechter’s adaptation, which is apparently keeping its name.

We don’t know much more about the film, but The Switch‘s Amazon entry has this to say:

Black Ordell Robbie and white Louis Gara have lots in common – time in the same gaol, convictions for auto theft, and a grand plan. They’re going to snatch the wife of a Detroit developer and collect some easy ransom money. At least that’s what they think…What they haven’t figured on is the fact that the husband has a secret mistress and has absolutely no desire to get his wife back. So now it’s time for Plan B. With the help of one seriously ticked-off housewife they are going to take the scumbag for everything he’s got…

That actually sounds quite good. We’ll read The Switch over the weekend and get back to you!

Have you read The Switch? What do you think of Hawkes’ and Bey’s casting? Let us know below!

Does anyone mind?

Oh rumour rumour, you saucy-lipped mistress you. Today the interwebs are abuzz with the news that the third in the Bridget Jones series has been put on hold – possibly permanently – because of major script problems. Working Title and Universal have both denied the claims, saying that filming will still begin later this year. But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt about “unnamed sources”, it’s that they’re fun to speculate about on a Friday morning.

According to Deadline Hugh Grant walked out of a script meeting after citing problems with the story, and it was looking less and less likely that shooting would begin at all after the film had been unceremoniously dumped by director Paul Feig. But to be honest, the core team is still pretty darn strong – it sounds like both Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger are still desperate to get started, and new director Peter Cattaneo (of The Full Monty fame) is actually a much better fit for the project anyway.

So when will we know for certain? Probably only when the cameras start to roll. Without a third novel to base the film on, (and considering the lack-lustre sequel), we’re still pretty wary of the idea of a third outing for Silly Bridget. At the end of the day, do we want to see yet another comedy fight between Oscar Winner Colin Firth and Best Days Are Behind Him Hugh Grant? Well… yes. We’re pretty easy to please, when it comes down to it.

For some reason.

Ahead of its inevitably disastrous conversion into clunky, pointless 3D, Warner Bros. have released a few more images from Wrath of the Titans, the crap sequel to a crap remake of an endearingly crap film. Savour the bi-dimensionality; it won’t last.

The images show overrated meatsack Sam Worthington frowning in a variety of different lights, as well as Rosamund ‘I swear I used to be a proper actress’ Pike clutching desperately at a sword with the presumable intention of ramming it into her abdomen.

Click the pictures to make them endlessly, pointlessly bigger:

Well, that was underwhelming. Wrath of the Titans is out at some point this year, and if all you bastards hadn’t gone to see the last one despite it being utter garbage then maybe this wouldn’t have happened. Do you know what they’ve done to Bill Nighy? They’re making him play Hephaestus. Bill Nighy! Hephaestus! You make us sick.

The latest addition to the ‘Blank on a Plane’ genre, following hot on the heels of ‘Snakes on a Plane’, ‘Snipes on a Plane’, ‘Convicts on a Plane’, ‘President on a Plane’ and ‘Jodie Foster on a Plane’, early rumours would have had you believe that 7500, the latest chiller from Ju-On mastermind Takashi Shimizu, was to be the genre’s natural conclusion: ‘Zombies on a Plane.’ Thankfully, the internet was WRONG, again (and also ‘Zombies on a Plane’ kind of already exists). What we’re actually getting is.. well.. maybe just watch the trailer first.

So it’s.. ‘Ghosts on a Plane’? ‘Demons on a Plane’? ‘Things Hiding in Various Types of Storage.. on a Plane’? Though this trailer does adhere to a few cliches – breathy lady version of a popular song, remarkably familiar font – it does manage to avoid the most heinous by giving pretty much nothing away. Other than having our interest piqued, what have we learnt?

1. Amy Smart will never age
2. Pretty much all the boarding informartion for Flight 7500
3. There are scary bits
4. The whole thing may well be caused by that guy not turning his phone off

And that’s pretty much it. So what now? I GUESS WE’LL HAVE TO GO SEE IT AND FIND OUT WONT WE ARGHHHHHHH.

"I will have my vengeance, in this life or.. no, you're basically all going to die"

As you may or may not know, Darren Aronofsky wants to do a film about Noah. You’ve probably heard of this Noah fellow; he’s that bloke who was a fan of boats and ensuring that animals could get it on despite adverse weather conditions. Aronofsky announced early last year that his next project was going to be a biblical epic, and after the ridiculous success that was Black Swan, it wasn’t long before Paramount and New Regency were scrambling to be a part of it. According to HitFix, reports are that he’s pursing the angriest man in Hollywood – Russell Crowe, for the title role.

There are also whispers that he wants Liam Neeson in a supporting role – first badger? Second, female badger? Lest we forget, the last time Neeson And Crowe teamed up for a project the result was the desperately underwhelming The Next Three Days, but with Neeson’s Grey success and Russell Crowe not grabbing anyone by the throat for a while now, it might be that the tide is turning in Noah‘s favour. As it were.

Nothing’s confirmed yet, so take at as jovial hearsay for now. But it will be interesting to see what Aronofsky does with a mega-budget; we know he’s very well suited to smaller films like the wonderful Pi and Requiem , will more money dilute or intensify his brand of creative genius? Let’s find out, BIBLE STYLE.

We've always wanted an excuse to say the word "gigolo" in polite conversation...

You know what we don’t have enough of? Elderly male gigolos spilling their guts on the rich and famous. Scotty Bowers has, thankfully, put a stop to the endless waiting around for a miracle; the 88 year old has published his memoirs, detailing his work with screen icons such as Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.

Nice try Scotty. You might have had us fooled with Spencer, but we know for a FACT that Katherine Hepburn was gay… oh. Oh you’re saying she WAS gay and you helped her find lesbian lovers? S’cool then. You carry on.

Apparently, the first time the well-greased gas attendant / sex slave met Hepburn, she was sporting a suit and very short hair. All this despite the fact that her agents had been pleading with her not to advertise the fact that she was gay.

Bowers claimed that Hepburn approached him with the following line:

“I know your reputation, Scotty. When you get a chance, do you think you can find a nice, young dark-haired girl for me? Someone that’s not too heavily made-up.”

Of course, the pair hit it off straightaway and remained pals for the next 50 years. Nowadays, however, keeping secrets isn’t quite as well-paid as publishing them all in a novel, and Bowers now claims he fixed Katherine up with more than 150 women. Ladette.

Next thing you know, his novel will be a biopic. Everybody loves biopics at the moment. And it’s a SEXY biopic too; move over Lovelace, you have major competition de futuro.

Are you going to read Bowers’ Full Service and find out all his sexy sexy secrets? YEAH YOU ARE!

Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, the story of alleged triple child murderers the West Memphis Three and the furore that erupted during their 1994 trial, has snagged its second Oscar-winning cast member – Colin Firth has joined the production alongside Reese Witherspoon.

Firth will play Ronald L Lax, the private investigator who worked pro bono on behalf of the Three after he became convinced of their innocence. Lax found potentially damning DNA evidence which suggested that victim Stevie Branch’s stepfather Terry Hobbs (husband of Witherspoon’s character Pam) was present at the crime scene, although Hobbs has never been officially charged with involvement in the murders.

Interestingly, the new DNA (a hair tied into one of the knots used to secure the victims) was not discovered until 2007; we had previously assumed that Devil’s Knot would be set at the time of the murders, but based on this new information we may be mistaken. More on that conundrum as we get it!

Devil’s Knot is due to start shooting this summer. Who do you think did it?

... and we're in love with it.

You’re probably a bit bored of people banging on about how brilliant Drive was and what a crime that it was basically ignored in awards ceremonies worldwide, but dammit it WAS brilliant and it WAS a crime that it was basically ignored in awards ceremonies worldwide. Still. Off the back of DVD and Blu-ray sales Nicolas Winding Refn’s stylish thriller is already being touted as a cult classic, and finally, FINALLY, it’s got some artwork that matches its 80s cool.

In celebration of the film’s success, Mondo have commisioned Ken Taylor (known for his bitchin’ rock posters) an official alternative poster, one that completely blows the first, rather lack-lustre attempt out of the water. Look at it. Just look at it:

And the best part is that the clever Mondo folk are well aware of how valuable this print is going to be, announcing that extra copies printed in 24″ x 36″ will be sold online starting Thursday, February 2nd. Follow @mondonews on Twitter to be in with a (very, very small) chance of getting your sweaty hands on one. Sigh. Why isn’t all big budget movie advertising this good?

WE LOVE YOU RICHARD, PICK US RICHARD

Matching the acclaim of his directorial debut Submarine was never going to be an easy feat, but thankfully it doesn’t look like Richard Ayoade’s particularly fazed by the hype. The director/writer/performer/smugbastard is throwing himself into his next project – adapting Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Double for the screen. And what’s more, he plans on improving the original tale. Poor chap, if only he had just a little more confidence…

We wrote a while back that the adaptation had a Jesse Eisenberg attached to it, and we can now tell you that he’ll be starring against Jane Eyre‘s Mia Wasikowska. Dostoyevsky’s novella The Double is a dark, surreal tragedy following a bank clerk who slowly comes to believe that a doppleganger is trying to usurp him. When asked about the project a while ago, Ayoade stated in typical dead-pan style:

“it’s funny, I think. Very funny. Dostoevsky never finished it to his satisfaction… So yes, we’re going to dust that off… We’ll do what Fyodor couldn’t.”

Lad.

We probably don’t need to mention how excited we are to see more of Ayoade’s directorial undercarriage. Shooting begins this spring, so we’ll probably get the finished product by the end of the year. Until then, it’s just going to have to be Garth Marenghi on repeat…
