Sleeping Beauty trailer is rather surprising

Having just starred in Sucker Punch; the (dreadful) film where she played a young woman fractured and lost in a world entirely revolving around her own sexuality, Emily Browning is back in a film where she plays a young woman fractured and lost in a world entirely revolving around her own sexuality. Only this time nothing explodes, probably.

Today we got a first glimpse of Sleeping Beauty – a dark retelling of the classic fairytale which apparently centres around a high-class brothel. Browning plays a gorgeous young thing that drifts into a very specific type of prostitution: the kind where men do stuff to her while she sleeps. Although the premise is deeply disturbing, the trailer itself is dreamy and rather beautiful – it reminds us of the gently-simmering dystopian horror of Never Let Me Go. Either that or it’s just an mournful justification of watching loads of fit birds take their stuff off and stuff.

Ignoring the fact that it’s rather pretentiously being “presented” and “made by” by two different people (as well as the fact that one of those people is quoted IN THE TRAILER ITSELF), it still looks like a fairly interesting and stylish offering written and directed by first-timer Julia Leigh. Ideally, it’d be great to see if Emily Browning has anything to offer besides milky skin and pouty lips, but we fear this may not be the film to pin our hopes on…
