The Fido Awards

This entry was posted 2 years, 189 days ago

Canine characters, puppy protagonists and headlining hounds are becoming more and more frequent on our screens. It’s only fair therefore, that their contribution to the world of cinema (which is cluttered with humans) is acknowledged and rewarded.

The Fido awards which are a kind of Oscars for dogs, will take place this weekend at the BFI Southbank in London. The awards were founded by journalist Toby Rose, and began as a tribute to his late dog Mutley, who appeared in a number of TV shows, numerous fashion publications as well as meeting some of Hollywood’s A-listers such as Steven Spielberg.

Like all award ceremonies, the prizes are split into categories. They include awards for best “Rom-Com Rover”, best “Comedy Canine” as well as “Mutt Moment”. Previous winners include the corgis from Stephen Frears’ 2006 royal-themed picture The Queen. This years top contenders include the eight beautiful Labradors that played the misbehaving mutt Marley from Marley and Me and the droll dinky dogs from Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Even CGI dog Bolt is nominated for best comedy canine. Currently in their third year running, dog lovers and movie lovers will join this Sunday and put their paws together to celebrate the achievements of our canine companions. Can I get a WOOF! WOOF!
