It’s been 18 years since Bryan Singer launched his career with the neo-noir The Usual Suspects. Nowadays, his name has come to be more synonymous with the comic-book conversion, having garnered success with two X-Men movies and the slightly less thrilling Superman Returns. Both blended the mechanics of live action with the art of CGI, so the man certainly has enough experience within this form. As such it would only be natural for him to turn those talents loose on the family-friendly fairy-tale.
Killing implies blood, death, murder. Slaying implies bunnies, candy-floss and cuddles, apparently.
Rupert Sanders gives us an exceedingly grim Grimm universe in this LOTR-inspired fairytale; his sweeping landscapes and sumptuous visuals almost making up for the fact that his source material never comes close to the richness of Tolkien. The tale may be problematic and the characters laughably thin, but there’s no denying that this directorial debut almost wins you over with blazing ambition alone.

Just when you thought the ship had finally sunk to the bottom of the sea bed, those pirates, who may or may not be in the Caribbean any more, swing back with another romping instalment of nautical based madness. Your timbers should indeed be shivering.
