As the first trailer is revealed for Joel and Ethan Coen’s take on the tale that won John Wayne an Oscar in 1969, we should probably make something clear; this probably isn’t the True Grit that your dad loved.

Wonderfully acted and beautifully shot, Winter’s Bone has been causing a sensation on the festival circuit. Yet although the film may deliver as a piece of cinema, its story leaves little impact. A bit like looking at a lovely painting of nothing in particular.

But don’t be fooled! With the addition of some superb voice talent and snazzy FX, first-time directors the McHenry brothers have created an unorthodox but thrilling cinematic taste sensation. Think chicken hearts and fried banana (trust us on that one).
