Hailed as part of the continuing renaissance of Matthew McConaughey, Mud is an odd reflection on turbulent adolescence and the death of naivety. Mud leaves little room for interpretation and the story isn’t the most memorable, but it certainly deserves all the accolades plastered over the posters. Surprisingly nuanced performances, even from the younger cast members, a fantastical score, beautiful camera work and a boat in a tree lead to a great drama lacking the usual schmaltzy tosh.
Pedro Almodóvar’s new film Los Amantes Pasajeros, or I’m So Excited to us English-speaking jerks, is officially out in cinemas everyone! It’s obviously going to be totally weird because it’s by Pedro Almodóvar. Did you guys see that movie, The Skin I Live In? WHAT WAS THAT? Anyway, this film is more or less The Skin I Live In On a Plane. More importantly, though, the film shares its English title with a very famous song by The Pointer Sisters, which got us thinking: what other films out there have famous songs for titles? Turns out, loads. Because nothing in this wretched world is original.
Real life brothers Koki and Ohshirô Maeda star in this gentle, poignant film about the power of imagination and friendship, and the inevitability of growing up. Though a little slow in places, Hirokazu Koreeda’s film is an unusually powerful musing on the everyday joys and sadnesses of life, that delights in celebrating the small things. Drawing on the kids-on-a-quest theme at the heart of many child-centric films, Koreeda’s film is a far more subtle affair than your average Disney flick and, in the end, shows us that there are no easy solutions when it comes to the break down of a family.
