When the credits rolled on Clerks II with the distinct feeling that a much-loved Kevin Smith chapter had closed, it was hard to see what his next move would be. With news that Red State, a so-called horror movie about a far-right Christian cult, was in the pipeline, it seemed as if Kevin Smith had left his Askewniverse behind completely. Well, not only is Red State Smith’s best film to date, but the similarities between it and his previous nine offerings are more numerous than one might expect; pointing to a director at the peak of his craft.
Australian cinema has given us some cult classics over the years, proving that the country’s cinematic output isn’t all Baz Luhrmann. The Castle, now being re-released 15 years after it was made, is perhaps the best of the bunch. Hilarious and touching – just get it, it’s a ripper! (That’s Australian for “good”).
Full disclosure – we may have been a bit snide when we heard about veteran Page 3 girl Keeley Hazell’s first starring role (as herself) in short film Venus and the Sun. Quite snide, in fact. Well, if you want to see a contrite film site then this is the place to look – we met up with her for a chat about legends, Latin and learning a brand new trade, and it was simply lovely.
