There was once a time when Sandra Bullock reigned supreme over the romantic comedy, but that time, as this film demonstrates, is well and truly over. This new ridiculous outing sees Bullock’s pushy book editor force her put-upon assistant to marry her to avoid deportation, and naturally (yet inexplicably) romance ensues. Even if you can put aside the formulaic stupidity, the chemistry between Reynolds and Bullock is about as poor as it gets. One to avoid unless you’re desperate.

Sparkly-toothed rom-com queen Cameron Diaz, last seen playing the mother of a cancer victim in the weepy My Sister’s Keeper, has had another go at a serious role, and guess..

The Fido awards which are a kind of Oscars for dogs, will take place this weekend at the BFI Southbank in London. Canine characters, puppy protagonists and headlining hounds are becoming more and more frequent on our screens. It’s only fair therefore that their contribution to the world of cinema (which is cluttered with humans) is acknowledged and rewarded.

For those who enjoy a mindless Sunday afternoon spent in front of a predictably happy rom-com, 17 Again is one of the better out there at the moment. Matthew Perry and Zac Efron are their dependably entertaining selves, while I Love You Man’s Thomas Lennon injects some scene-stealing hilarity.

Not on film quality, but on choice of protagonists. Where they can’t afford the original A-lister, there’s a number of cheaper alternatives for them to choose from.

In the age of Ron Burgundy, 40 Year Old Virgins, epic Hangovers and Funny People, it seems everyone is falling back in love with friendship. But how much can we really trust these young scallywags and their adventures? We fear for the hearts and minds of men everywhere…

We’re all for brainless and fluffy rom-coms, they’re what this country was built on after all. However, Confessions Of A Shopaholic not only lacks depth, but is devoid of humour, charm and pace. With so many other films in this genre offering quirky comedy, razor wit and serious style, we’re less than impressed. Shopaholic? We’re not buying it.
