For most of us, Stephanie Meyer is the devil incarnate. She took what was a perfectly good supernatural baddie and turned him in to a bedazzled, love-sick vegetarian for heavens sake! But, as with all evil geniuses, this one blasphemy was not enough. She has now turned her sights towards the time-honored tradition of alien invasion, turning it from an integral battle for human survival to just another run-of-the-mill, lame love triangle. Really, is nothing held as sacred anymore?!

Following hard-on from the news of the Pope’s resignation from the see of St Peter, we at BFF Towers got to thinking about some other epic resignations that have found their way onto our screens over the years. Eclectically scouring the realms of both television and cinema, we’ve come up with a Top 10 that could fuel the firing of any popemobile. Enjoy.

Rarely has a film with so much hype failed so horribly to deliver. Director Tony Gilroy seems to think he could get away with remaking the first Bourne, except without the amnesia. Or the excitement, characters, wit, joy, love interest, narrative, decent plot or action sequences. The fourth film, with its ‘wider conspiracy’ and all those ‘rewards for paying attention’ we were promised, is entirely uninspiring and utterly soulless.

Back on our screens for what feels like the umpteenth time this year, Jeremy Renner aims to take over from Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy. Whether life imitates art and the actor finds himself at the centre of another, very real mission impossible, you should probably swat up on The Other Avenger as it looks like he’s undoubtedly here to stay.

Riding off the high of Moonrise Kingdom (which has apparently taken $44 million worldwide), Wes Anderson is keen to get going quickly on his next project – and boy does..

With a hiatus of well over a decade, Detachment is director Tony Kaye’s first feature film since American History X. A stylized indie exploration of the life of a high school substitute and the broken public school system, it’s visually very impressive and boasts a stellar cast being totally stellar. Unfortunately it insists on hurling misery at you like its disaffected teens throw the outdated resource materials in their underfunded library at each other (violently and often).

Take a deep breath and prepare yourself for an exhaustive year of EPIC action films. 2012 is the official year of explosive sequels, daring superheroes and hardcore fairy tales. Just make sure you have an oxygen tank nearby.

This summer, you can hardly move for superhero films – and Green Lantern aside, we’ve seen most of the stars before. All the classic heroes have had a fair few outings with different faces by now, and if there’s one thing we hate about competition it’s not knowing who’s the WINNER. Feel like arbitrarily deciding whether Michael Keaton’s better at being grumpy than Christian Bale? Good.
