What with Toby Jones playing Alfred Hitchcock in a new TV drama, there’s only question on everyone’s minds: who wins Best Hitchcock Impersonator, Toby Jones or Anthony Hopkins? The new biopic of the ‘Master of Suspense’ is certainly stylish, but lacks plausibility as it introduces a fictitious storyline between Hitchcock’s wife and Whitfield Cook. That being said, it’s entertaining and breathes new life into Alma Reville, ‘the woman behind the man’.
Bernard Rose’s new film is a sparse, quietly naturalistic slow-burner that grapples with some of the big questions through the medium of a very small story. Underpinned by the fascinating dynamic between its two leads, Danny Huston and Matthew Jacobs, and swinging from the banal to the life-or-death in a heartbeat, Boxing Day is an oddly affecting film that – despite taking a while to get to the point – has a deeply moving and important message at its heart.
This visually appealing ‘action’ film sets a terrific standard as an entertaining feature – but struggles with a less than engaging story and disappointing climax.
It turns out hell does have a fury like a woman scorned – a father’s loss. Just ask Liam Neeson in Taken and now Mel Gibson in his new ‘actioner’, Edge of Darkness. After a good few years dedicating himself to his behind the camera endeavours, Gibson returns to his -just this side of sanity- best with Edge of Darkness. Bad guys beware, you went after his daughter, now he’s coming for you!
