Matt Damon makes an early bid for Oscar glory in Promised Land, a gentle yet compelling drama about a small farming town facing an economic and industrial meltdown. While the financial difficulties faced by its characters will resonate with a lot of people, it feels a little out of date and we never get a sense of why this particular story is being told now.
What do you get if you take Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, some kids and Wes Anderson’s terrifying, beautiful mind? NO, not an orgy with incredibly good dialogue. Did you not read the “some kids” bit? Anyway, it turns out you get perfectly crafted 60s fairytale Moonrise Kingdom, a loving paean to childhood, companionship and, well, camping. It’s a real treat.
Paolo Sorrentino’s last film, Il Divo, was a tour-de-force, an inventive, intelligent and witty semi-biopic of Italian political titan Giulio Andreotti that took Cannes by storm. The follow up is also intelligent, witty and inventive. It’s also deeply irritating, uneven and unlikeable. Shame.
