Why second guess a master, eh?
When it comes to vampire flicks, it seems that all Hollywood has to do is bare its money-spinning neck and audiences around the world will guzzle away. So after almost a century of vampire films, how did the cinematic interpretation move from Nosferatu to the perfectly coiffed Edward Cullen from the Twilight Saga? Will current film releases Stakeland and Priest take us back to a more traditionalist approach? And why are we still even interested?
In February of 1976 Francis Ford Coppola and his American Zoetrope production team began filming Apocalypse Now. Approximately 3 years later and reportedly some $30 million over budget the film premiered at the Cannes festival to wide critical acclaim. Now, some 30 years down the line the Vietnam epic has been lovingly restored by Coppola’s own production company and is back on the big screen. It should go without saying that for a generation of cinephiles this presents an opportunity not to be missed.
Ah, Tim Burton. It seems everyone’s got an opinion on the pseudo-gothic king of whimsical romantic fantasy – whether you worship his early work and abominate Alice in Wonderland, prefer his more straightforward films (Planet of the Apes, anyone?) or just want to see more dead women getting married, it’s hard to stay neutral.
