Someone once said ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Well the old rom-com formula isn’t really broke, but this film tried to fix it anyway, by inserting a huge lump of cancer into the plot. Romance, laughs, dates and cancer- oh dear, who honestly thought this formula was ever going to work?

Excellent directorial fiction debut from well-known actor Diego Luna, Abel is a comedy which is by turns charming, powerful and absorbing. Unlikely to be given a wide release, this is well worth seeking out if a cinema in your area is screening it.

From the mind of one time prodigy Lukas Moodysson (Together, Show Me Love), Mammoth tells a Babel-esque story of two families as they co-exist on two sides of the planet. Unlike Babel, it does so brain-numbingly badly.
