  • Red Dawn

In 1984, Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey took up arms in guerrilla warfare to safe-guard their America from the the Soviet Union and its Cuban and Nicaraguan allies. In 2012, this premise was re-worked to suit the current political climate, making North Koreans the new big baddies. One was made at a time when the Cold War was still a heavy presence in U.S. culture. The other came about during a time of re-make madness.

  • Immortals

Oh hi, Tarsem Singh. Ever heard of Icarus? Yeah, he was the son of Daedalus, escaped from Crete with wings made of wax, all that. Dead? Yeah, he’s dead – flew too close to the sun, arrogant little tit. Hubristic? Yeah, I suppose he was – still, at least he didn’t have the gall to make Immortals. Did he, Tarsem Singh? DID HE?

  • Daybreakers

Warning – don’t go and see this film expecting another Twilight. The vamps in Daybreakers belong firmly to the old school of demonesque bad guys who have overrun the earth and must be hunted down with machine guns, exploding crossbows and other such gore-porn paraphernalia. The action is set 10 years in the future, where the human population has been infected with vampirism and blood has become as big a business as Coca-Cola. It’s up to Ethan Hawke’s erstwhile hematologist to save the population from themselves, but mostly he just ends up shooting a lot of stuff.
