Savages is curious, in that it’s not the sort of film you might associate with the often solemn, politicised pictures of Oliver Stone. In contrast, this is a lively, breezy crime-thriller, buoyed by a sunny tone, some very dark humour, and – a few bland leads aside – some very memorable characters.

The dearly departed Shrek franchise is given a welcome dose of prequel shock treatment in this high-octane and utterly shameless Zorro rip-off. THRILL to Puss’ mesmerising swordplay! GASP as Kitty Softpaws steals all of the things, all of the time! WONDER why nobody comments on the sudden plague of accented cats!

Actors like cats! Banderas likes cats! Cats watch films! It’s all official!

Okay, so there are these grown ups who act like children, right? And their children, they act like grownups. And the grownups want the children to act like children like they did when they were children, and they realise that showing their children how to act like children will help them stop acting like children and start acting like grownups and oh god stop my brain hurts.

With millions of kids around the world getting a taste for blood, there’s never been a better time for vampiric stories to be transferred to the big screen. However, we can’t help feeling that with confusing storytelling and lack of energy, this one lacks bite.
