Side Effects may cause drowsiness: Steven Soderbergh’s neo-noir cum psychological thriller is contagiously dreamy, until it evolves into a nightmare. It’s brilliant. If Soderbergh really is retiring, he’s certainly ended on a high. Side Effects encompasses some of the key themes he has explored throughout his career (it has the sex, it has the lies, it has the videotape) and forms a tribute to past cinema, channeling a Hitchcockian narrative, style and tone.
Guided by the probing mind of Keanu Reeves, Side By Side is a thoughtful documentary exploring the near universal adoption of digital filmmaking techniques by an industry once defined by the physicality of photochemical film. While most of the directors interviewed wax lyrical about new cinematic frontiers and the endless possibilities presented by the 21st century’s digital playground, some dissenters suggest such freedoms mightn’t be such a good thing.
The indie awards are not so indie this year.
Savages is curious, in that it’s not the sort of film you might associate with the often solemn, politicised pictures of Oliver Stone. In contrast, this is a lively, breezy crime-thriller, buoyed by a sunny tone, some very dark humour, and – a few bland leads aside – some very memorable characters.
