Top 5 ex-couples reunited on screen
Oh the romance, the drama! Sometimes we at BFF do love a good Hollywood break-up. But amidst ours gasps and gossiping, won’t someone spare a thought for those poor movie stars who have to star in a movie… WITH THEIR EX? Dun dun duuuun. Here are five ex-couples, reunited on screen.
#5 – Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
They were two beautiful blonde young things, and they were doin’ it. Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake met at the Kids Choice Awards in 2003 and soon began a relationship that promised the kind of glory only seen in the very rom-com films they starred in. Some minor controversy came from the fact that Diaz was almost ten years older than JT, but other than that, the couple kept pretty quiet, until 2007 when they released news of their break-up. They have since appeared in films together not once, but twice, (in Shrek the Third although we couldn’t actually see it) and Bad Teacher. Diaz was reported to say of the recent casting match, “We’ve always loved laughing together and yes, we went out, and yes, people think it should be awkward, but it really isn’t”. N’aww… So could they be getting back together? No. They are both adamant that is not on the cards, as Justin said in an interview, “Our only trepidation in doing this movie is that people would make a big to do about that”. Fine. Big to-do over.
#4 – Courteney Cox and David Arquette
We loved Courteney Cox and David Arquette. She’s beautiful, he’s weird, their kid is really cute, it was a perfect (too strong?) match. They were together for eleven years, having met during filming for the first Scream movie, but separated last year on apparently good terms. Just as well, because ten years after Scream 3 the fourth episode of the saga was released this year and they both starred. They claim filming was a pleasure, and when Cox was asked if they might reconcile she answered, “I don’t know. We’re not divorced. We couldn’t be in a better place. It’s better than before we were separated.” It seems that somehow, making cheesy horror movies brings the romance out of these two.
#3 – Woody Allen and Diane Keaton
It all began way back in 1970. Woody Allen cast Diane Keaton in his Broadway title Play It Again, Sam, and ever since then the pair have had a very public (and unstable) relationship. There’s certainly no doubt how much Keaton affected Allen’s work, he claims “After I met Keaton I could write women, and only write women, that was all that interested me”, and in the forty years they have known each other he has ensured she starred in no less than eight of his films including Annie Hall, Love and Death, and Sleeper. Although they officially ended their relationship in 1972, they continued to work together (among other things) for almost a decade, until Allen started his infamous relationship with Mia Farrow. Amidst the whole Woody-Allen-hooks-up-with-Farrow’s-adopted-daughter mess, Keaton emerged as lead role in Allen’s 1993 feature, Manhattan Murder Mystery, where they replayed the good ol’ times up on the screen and and bought back that free love seventies vibe.
#2 – Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck
Yes before all the Chris Martin/charity/yoga shenanigans, Hollywood’s delicate flower Gwyneth Paltrow dated Mr Dimple Chin Affleck. Back in 1997 the couple got together, but it was destined to be short lived and after only two years, they split. But hold on a minute, in 2000 they both starred in Bounce – a romantic drama involving a plane crash (surely there’s a nose-dive pun in here somewhere). On the set they apparently rekindled their old flame (theeere we go) only to split once more before the year was out. Claiming that Affleck “makes life tough for himself”, there’s little doubt that Gwyn has any regrets about ending their relationship. Now, if only she could find a man with a simple, wholesome, rockstar life who shares her penchant for stupid children’s names…
#1 – Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston
Possibly the coolest couple ever? Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston dated for a whopping seventeen years between 1973 and 1990, and during that time things were apparently pretty rough. Jack was quite literally a lad, and cheated on Anjelica numerous times until she ended up returned the favour, so by the final years of their relationship they were both seeing other people and living in separate houses. The nail in the coffin came in 1990 when Nicholson got a waitress pregnant, and the couple called it quits in messy Hollywood fashion. Five years later they were back together in Sean Penn’s drama The Crossing Guard, but considering after their split Huston was reported to claim, “I felt like there was a death in the family – what I’d been through was that bad”, its difficult to imagine the atmosphere on set. Awkward much?
