Narnia fans are going back in time as Walden Media have announced that for the fourth film, they are adapting the first book, The Magician’s Nephew – rather than continuing chronologically with The Silver Chair.

The first of the seven novels is set before the Pevensie children were born, which means that none of the child actors so far will feature. Which may be a blessing. The book is an origin story, following young Digory, who is Professor Kirke (Jim Broadbent) from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, into Narnia as he witnesses its creation with his friend Polly. It explains how a lamppost came to be in a Narnian forest, why the wardrobe is a portal and how the White Witch came to rule. This will mean another appearance – not just a cameo – for Tilda Swinton, who was easily the best thing about the first film.

The reason for going back rather than moving on to The Silver Chair is that The Magician’s Nephew is the second best-selling book in the series, translating to bigger box office revenue. Fans of the series may find it easy to be cynical about this rationale, but large revenue will increase the chance of the remaining books making it to the screen. Of course, there are those who really couldn’t give a (talking) monkey about it either way…
