Hmmm…. Columbia Pictures has signed up M. Night Shyamalan to co-write and direct the latest Will Smith film, which will also star mini-Smith Jaden (The Karate Kid).

It seems that Shyamalan is been given a chance to redeem himself after the car crash that was The Last Airbender, universally derided as being, well, car-crashingly awful. It’s got a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Time critic Richard Corliss said of it: “Actors who didn’t get to be in The Last Airbender are like the passengers who arrived too late to catch the final flight of the Hindenburg.” Ouch.

Anyway, the as yet unnamed Smith film is set 1,000 years into the future and sees a boy and his father crash land on an empty Earth and go exploring. Will Smith is still A-list gold, so it’s bound to be a little successful.
