With the Oscars almost upon us once again, we at Best For Film thought that we might profit from a review of some of the highlights said gushing award ceremony has provided us with over the years. For the sake of variety, this laudable list shall include both the famous and the infamous, the highs and the lows, the sugar and the bitters. Such a cocktail should be swirled in the mouth like the metaphorical marbles of Sir Laurence Olivier’s plumy tones, or alternatively expelled in disgust like a Michael Moore acceptance speech. At the invitation of the Swedenborg Society, Best For Film is publishing a special series of reviews to follow its ‘Images of the Afterlife in Cinema’ film season, which will be exploring life, death and everything in between. This week we take a look at what happens when there’s a mix up in heaven in A Matter of Life and Death.
The title says it all, really. It was bound to happen, especially when you look at the numbers. Released on November 10th, the multi-platform video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million units in the first 24 hours of release in UK and US alone – considering the game is about £40 a pop and that’s near-as-dammit to £200 million in less than a day.
Revel in the nostalgia of some cheap animation before burning with thorough and righteous indignation that Hollywood still made “Battlefield Earth” before any of these.
