It’s Friday, the week is taking its trousers off, and humans worldwide are searching desperately for a reason to get drunk and lairy. Well we’ve got one. Judd Apatow: comedy messiah, or deadbead one-noter? Two of our writers stop talking in nice voices, and instead start throwing their words about like syllable-based rocks. Whose side are you on?
Andrei Tarkovsky is internationally recognised as one of history’s most stylistic and influential filmmakers. Nearly 25 years after his death, Artificial Eye pays tribute to the director with their release of The Andrei Tarkovsky Collection. This box-set might make your other DVDs seem inferiorly uncultured (depending on your level of pretentiousness of course) but if you appreciate the poetry of Tarkovsky’s Russian cinema this is indeed a culturally significant film collection worth investing in.
The Ending of a film is often the most memorable part – and we’ve gathered ten of our favorite final lines of dialogue for your viewing pleasure.
Remember the golden days of George Lucas? Remember when Zemeckis was coming out with hit after hit? Remember when Tim Burton didn’t just paint everything black and shove his wife into shot? We do. We present the five directors we mourn the hardest – made all the more bitter by the fact that they’re all still alive.
This weekend sees the nationwide release of Potiche, a glorious French farce from the totally irrepressible François Ozon which stars legendary screen couple Catherine Deneuve (swoon) and Gérard Depardieu (double swoon). We caught up with M Ozon at London’s Institut Français for a cheeky little tête à tête…
Once again the BFF turrets are darkened and silent, with our latest pack of temporary scribbling soliders having departed for warmer (actually paid) climes. But the tears of man are nothing to the merciless God of Two For One, and the old sages of the kingdom MUST BATTLE ON. Today is Wednesday, and as Rebecca Black would say – something to do with it not being Friday. Well said, Rebecca Black. Well said.
He’s been the driving force behind some of the most elegant and successful animated films of all time, he’s won two Oscars in four years, and now he’s taking over the Mission: Impossible franchise from J.J. Abrams. Who is this miracle man (don’t be misled by his surname, sexist 1970s chaps, he is indeed a man)? Read on!
Charlie, directed by Luke Snellin, is a wonderful tribute to Charlie Chaplin, the comedy genius of the silent era. For two minutes of joy, watch this launch film for Virgin Media Shorts 2011. It’s a cracker!
Super 8 draws ever nearer, and to celebrate the murky mysteries that lurk within it we’re composing some monsters of our own. Can you guess the three cinematic components to this week’s Mash-Up? Can you also figure out what’s going on with the perspective (hint: don’t try.) We’re giving away a MYSTERY (all about the mystery) cult horror box set to one lucky know-it-all, so GET TO WORK. Mysteriously, if you can.
As the impending atrocity that is Green Lantern looms ever closer (we’re resigned to it, we just are), we’ve decided it’s time we take a look behind the super powers. We’ve realised that it’s not the tight fitting cat suits, underwear on the outside or “inherent desire to do good” that makes a real superhero, it’s all about the blingin’ accessories! As it happens, we managed to come across a catalogue straight from the superheroes supplier detailing the ten most popular superhero accessories.
