  • Top 5 star-crossed couples who deserved everything they got

Ah, star-crossed love, favourite of doe-eyed teenage girls all over the land. This year sees the release of Upside Down, a classic posh-bird-falls-for-common-scamp tale, the extra romantic hurdle being EXISTING ON SEPARATE GRAVITATIONAL PLANES. As someone unwilling to date anyone more than three tube stops away (because ugh, effort), I can’t help but admire their tenacity. And that, with several other reasons, is why my life never formed the basis of a rom-com. Here are some folks who tried harder.

There aren’t many left now; Star Wars is lost, Die Hard’s been beaten into the ground… there are even rumours of a Roger Rabbit sequel in the works, because apparently just nothing is sacred. So here are the top 10 sequels we hope never happen.

  • Monday Face/Off – Jim Carrey

Ah, Jim Carrey. It seems as if everyone who is anyone has an opinion on this funnyman of big budget flicks – whether you adore his early works and abhore Mr Popper’s Penguins, prefer him to stick to comedy and steer clear of serious dramas (hello Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) or simply want to see him dress up in a funny costume, it’s hard not to have an opinion about good old Jim. So, with THAT in the forefront of our minds, Sarah and Nina have launched into an almighty row…

  • Ruby Sparks

A romantic comedy directed by husband and wife Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) and written by female lead Zoe Kazan, whose real life partner Paul Dano also stars, it is not unexpected that Ruby Sparks should have a lot to say about relationships. Where it does surprise, however, is in its refreshingly layered approach to the genre. Observing reality through the premise of a fairytale, it is at once a critique of fantasy and a lesson in how to make it real.

  • Top 10 Movies That Play With Time

You watch a film where it goes from beginning to end, with no flashbacks at all, and you call yourself a hardened movie fan? Shame on you! It’s all about jumping through the plot, a little like dropping a needle at random on an old vinyl to see what plays next. It’s sudden, it’s fractured, it’s completely confusing… it’s sometimes a bit gimmicky. But, oh my, how we love a clock that tock ticks rather than tick tocks!

  • Top 10 Jim Carrey Films

Everyone loves Jim Carrey, and what better time to do a shambolic career appraisal than with Mr. Popper’s Penguins coming out next week? Obviously that film will render this list null and void, and all other “Best Film” lists, as it promises to be ruddy brilliant, but until it that day here are our Top 10 Jim Carrey films. Somebody stop us!
