It’s grim. It’s really, really grim. No amount of preparation or love for your child can prepare you for Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger, which has more in common with Invasion of the Body Snatchers than it does with any other Christmas film. One could make a cogent argument that this film is a secret military project to liquify the brains of the populace.
Did you ever want to be an astronaut? What about a superhero? Did Harry Potter leave you wishing you could be a wizard? Well, luckily for you that’s never going to happen, and, as such, you’re never going to have to discover just how boring life as an Auror can be with no Voldemort to fight. For anyone growing up idolising famous movie doctors, scientists or police officers, however, disappointment is only one successful application away.

D’you know what Million Dollar Baby needed? A scruffy kid with big eyes, Evangeline Lilly, and MASSIVE ROBOTS. Hugh ‘all the genres, all of the time, so long as I get to be buff’ Jackman stars in an unreasonably enjoyable sci-fi sports extravaganza which will leave you wondering why Hollywood has never before made a robot fight a 2000lb bull.
There’s no denying that the ‘size zero’ culture has taken over the entertainment industry, and there is now an increasingly huge amount of pressure on film and TV stars to conform to Hollywood’s idea of perfection. But that idea is changing all the time – skinny was in, then curvy was in and now they just can’t make up their minds.
This week saw the first teaser trailer for the last instalment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, and we here at Best For Film were…well, there was a feeling that we’d seen it all before. The gloomy Gotham-scape, mumbled dialogue, lots of shadows and buildings and shiny digital compositions. It’s slick, and it’ll probably turn out to be a good end to a so-far great trilogy, but a tiny part of us was thinking: “It’s not as good as Memento, is it?”. Still, Nolan isn’t the first indie director to be lured in by the lights and financial muscle of Hollywood, as this handy list will attest to.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but here at Best For Film we’re not massive fans of November. The weather conditions are Baltic, it’s dark and dank outside and the fireworks were an anti-climax. Again. But never fear! The uneventful void between Halloween and Christmas must be filled! And how better than with one our carefully prescribed, life-affirming, top ten ‘Feel-good Films’…..
