Almost eight months before Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man hits cinemas, its dedicated website has gone live with much less fanfare than The Dark Knight Rises‘ Operation Early Bird site – and much, much more to read.

The site is filled with interesting titbits of info for Spidey fans, although it does also seem to embody the Nolan-esque shadowy aesthetic which so concerned us in that bloody poster.

The most intriguing revelations concern the storyline of what will presumably be another trilogy; here’s what the front page has to say:

Like most teenagers his age, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father held… a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story…

Father? This is very interesting – Sam Raimi’s films made virtually no mention of Peter Parker’s parents, sticking to trotting out Uncle Ben’s “with great power” line every five minutes throughout the trilogy. The blurb suggests that The Amazing Spider-Man, which prominently credits Campbell Scott as ‘Richard Parker’ on its cast page, may be drawing from the critically acclaimed Ultimate Spider-Man comic series, a daring reboot which revealed Peter’s late father to be a genius scientist working for the Avengers’ umbrella organisation S.H.I.E.L.D. on a new version of Captain America‘s Super Soldier Serum.

It’s also wroth noting that the streetwise Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) has been rewritten as an intern working at Oscorp, previously the cover for Norman Osborn/Green Goblin but now the workplace of Dr Curt Connors/The Lizard (Rhys Ifans). The only other major character to be featured onsite (apart from Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, of course) is Gwen’s father, NYPD Captain Stacy (Denis Leary). In the comics Leary is killed by falling debris during a battle in which Spider-Man is involved, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll make it to the sequel. For that matter, Gwen’s memorably shocking death was a landmark moment in the history of comic book conventions – we assume she’ll be sticking around, but who knows?
