Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have teamed up to produce a reboot of the Godzilla films. The new film is expected to be released in 2014 and will no doubt fill the giant lizard shaped hole that’s been left in our hearts since Roland Emmerich’s 1998 remake starring Matthew Broderick.

Sources say that the partnering studios intend to return Godzilla to its roots and consequently it will be much darker and grittier in tone than previous versions. As the original Godzilla character was a significant icon of Japanese pop culture conceived as a metaphor for nuclear warfare we’d be impressed if the studios decide to take a more intellectual approach with this but we have a feeling this is just wishful thinking.

As with most action/sci-fi flicks involving explosions and spectacle, the film will most likely be in 3D (audible groan) and has script writers David Callaham, David S. Goyer and Max Borenstein (whose collective work includes The Dark Knight, The Expendables and The Seventh Son) attached to write the screenplay. At present, the release date for the film falls on the same date that Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles are due to hit the big screen. Apart from the fact that there is clearly some kind of “mutated animals ruling the world” event we haven’t heard of taking place in 2014, it will be interesting to see which of these flicks will rule the box office.
