Danny Elfman to score Oz The Great And Powerful

It’s not just mere mortals who have their scraps, you know. After having a big bust up with director Sam Raimi over Spiderman 2, it looks like Danny Elfman is ready to dust off the hurt, hang up on Tim Burton (just for a minute) and give him another chance.

Elfman has announced that he’s to provide the music for the upcoming Oz The Great And Powerful; a film that’s already got a fair amount of star-power thanks to a cast including James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Zach Braff. At one time Raimi and Elfman had a beautiful, violin-inspiring relationship; working on four films together including the first two Spiderman flicks. Unfortunately though, somewhere around the second Spidey film, things seemed to go very sour. Elfman got extremely, unexpectedly specific in an interview with Total Film, stating:

“Spider-Man 2’ was a miserable experience. It’s like my connection with Sam got completely severed. As far as I’m concerned, he went to sleep, somebody put a pod next to him and when he awoke, he wasn’t the same person I’d known for a decade. He went from right there number two on my list of favourite directors to the exact opposite of what I look for in a film experience. Everything I could do on Spider-Man , I couldn’t do on Spider-Man 2. He got so intensely attached to the music that I couldn’t even adapt my own music close enough…It’s the first time I’ve ever walked from a director in 20 years. I’d rather go back to waiting tables than to do Spider-Man 2 again, to have to have the same experience.”

Gosh. Well, whether the boys have made up or the price is just right, we can expect Elfman’s tones all over that Emerald City. We just hope he’s not just so used to composing pseudo-gothic mystery tracks that we wonder why the yellow brick road hasn’t been coated in Burton stripes…
