Wolverine – rated R?
As he tours the world promoting Real Steel, poor old Hugh Jackman is unsurprisingly being showered with questions about the repeatedly delayed X-Men spin-off The Wolverine. James Mangold is set to direct following Darren Aronofsky‘s departure, but the project’s on hold until next year, by which time Jackman should have finished filming Les Mis.
He’s been pretty adept at dodging awkward questions, but this week Hugh’s let something interesting slip – he revealed that he and Mangold have discussed either making The Wolverine R-rated or filming two separate versions of the film, one for mature audiences and one to bring in the tweens and the big bucks.
Will this happen? Probably not; cutting out the teenage market would wreck The Wolverine‘s profits, and franchises like Christopher Nolan’s Batman series have demonstrated that you really don’t need a high certificate to ramp up the darkness. That said, I know we’d all like to see more of this side of Logan:
Who knows what’ll happen – maybe The Wolverine (R) will turn up as a DVD extra or similar. Mind you, if that nonsensical smoking edict comes into force Logan will be 18-rated whether he likes it or not.
