We’re not convinced by Locke. It’s got lots of four- and five-star reviews, sure, but lots of people voted for David Cameron and he’s literally destroying the welfare state as you read this. Don’t get us wrong, we like intensely minimalist films; Buried was ace, and 127 Hours was as good as a film about a man gnawing his arm off was ever going to be. And we love Tom Hardy, whether or not he’s pretending to be a traumatised background character from Gavin and Stacey. But this trailer’s just a bit… busy.

Hardy plays a very Welsh man who, as far as we can make out, is driving to London whilst taking a startling number of calls about various things. Writer/director Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) is indisputably talented, and there are few things that Hardy can’t rescue if he really tries, but we can’t shake the feeling that there’s an awful lot more happening than seems appropriate for a tense, “nail-biting” thriller. Having said that, though, great chunks of Tom Hardy staring through a windscreen in silence do not a thrilling trailer make. We’re not making up our minds on Locke just yet.
