Gerard Butler does all the emotions in new Machine Gun Preacher trailer

We’re never quite sure what to make of Gerard Butler. Often he seems happy to do what he does best – stomp about, killing things and shouting (300, Law Abiding Citizen, Rocknrolla), but he does have this nasty happen of trying to do appear in films where he has to try and have stupid human feelings (PS I Love You, The Ugly Truth, The Bounty Hunter). So what happens when you combine the two? Machine Gun Preacher, apparently.

Have a gander at the trailer below, and see how uncomfortably those two things sit together. Particularly enjoy the inclusion of the actual line “SO THAT I CAN SAVE SOME CHILDREN”. Wonderful stuff:

So what can we make of it? Based on the true story of a bad-guy-come-good named Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher seems to swing madly between being a blast-tastic war flick, a “one man’s struggle to find himself” redemption tale and, well, Gerard Butler hugging lots of kids. Intriguing? Yes. A guaranteed winner? Not yet.
