Harry Potter now the highest grossing franchise of all time

We were beginning to get worried here at Best For Film, as it’s been at least 5 minutes since the last bit of Harry Potter news. Never fear though, as today it has been revealed that the wizarding cash-cow has overtaken Star Wars to become the highest grossing franchise of all time, with the cumulative gross of all eight films being a staggering $2.223 Billion.

Star Wars and Harry Potter are so far the only franchises ever to break the two-billion mark, but it’s hardly fair to compare the two’s box office performances. In 1977, when Star Wars: A New Hope was released, the average price of a movie ticket in America was $2.25, whereas the average price of a movie ticket now is nearly four times that. So really, if you think about it, and I mean really think about it, long and hard, until words lose all meaning, Harry Potter hasn’t done shit.

So Harry Potter has eclipsed Star Wars in terms of financial success, but what about in terms of quality? Which series do you prefer? Let us know
