Johnny Depp to produce and star in Dr Seuss biopic
It looks like the ever-busy Depp isn’t taking any breaks upon finishing up with Burton’s Dark Shadows. Word is he’s signed off on a new project – producing, as well as possibly starring in, a Dr Seuss biopic. Flippety Gibblity! (or whatever he actually says)
Depp has already taken on the role of one literary giant – J.M Barrie in Finding Neverland – but embodying the massively prolific Theodor Seuss Geisel (who wrote over 40 kids books) will be another challenge entirely. Apparently filming in live-action with the possibilities for “animated bells and whistles”, we think it’s probably safe to say that anything could be on the agenda. This is the man who wrote and illustrated Green Eggs and Ham, How The Grinch Stole Christmas and Horton Hears A Who, after all. He’s an interesting man to study, considering the stark contrast between his joyful work and his personal life – his first wife contracted cancer and committed suicide upon learning he had had an affair, and he never had any children of his own.
Interesting fact for you (to take us away from cancer and suicide of a morn) – though the general pronunciation of “Seuss” is so that it rhymes with “juice”, it’s ACTUALLY supposed to rhyme with “voice”. How will Depp and co approach it? We’ll have to wait and see…
