“Can I stay for a while?” “No, Hugh Grant. Fuck off.”
Rom-coms don’t get a great rep these days do they? Understandably, we like it when a good one comes along. Be prepared for your fondness for Emma Stone to turn into full-fledged obsession. Girls want to be her, boys want to take her home, have a chat, and then ask her tentatively to be their girlfriend.
If only George Clooney looked comfortable in sharp suits…
In any trial, anywhere, someone’s gotta represent the bad guy, right? Matthew McConaughey is brilliantly tortured in The Lincoln Lawyer; a tense and twisty courtroom thriller that showcases the wrinkly best of some veteran acting talent. Essentially a clever little tale let down by some silly plot-points and a baggy ending, The Lincoln Lawyer still does just about enough to keep you guessing until its final (slightly ridiculous) moments.
John C Reilly and Jonah Hill plod happily through comedy/drama Cyrus; it’s just such a shame that their material never quite matches their obvious talent. Though a few moments of great dark humour lift the storyline, dreadful camera work and a lack-lustre ending drag Cyrus’s high flying stars down almost to amateur level.
