Jeff Bridges’ apparently immovable jaw leads a beautifully crafted three-hander in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit. A confidently gentle pace and sparse backdrop means the focus of this Western re-make is always on the shifting central relationships rather than action- and though this may make for slightly frustrating viewing for shoot-em-up-ride-em-off lovers, the payoff is well worth the (slightly) clippety-cloppety ride.
Within 6 short months, Matt Damon has managed to appear in three films; True Grit, Hereafter and The Adjustment Bureau. Has Damon started to say “yes” to everything his agent throws at him? Is he the new Nicolas Cage? Before he goes and soils his quite astonishing career, we thought we’d have a look at the best of Damon.
BFF: defenders of the weak, trumpeters of the down-trodden, makers of wild, unsubstantiated claims and lovers of Ben Affleck. That’s right. It’s a heady mix.

Last week we reported that Bourne writer Tony Gilroy had taken on the directing position for the fourth Bourne film; The Bourne Legacy. The question was, was Matt Damon going to get involved? We can confirm today that big man Bourne will NOT feature in the new film (what?!), and so Matt Damon is out on his ear.
Much like The Sugababes (we start most news stories with that statement), it could be that the final Bourne product ends up looks absolutely nothing like its first incarnation. We’ve heard today that writer Tony Gilroy has taken over from Paul Greengrass as the director of Bourne: Legacy, and there’s no Matt Damon confirmation in sight. Lordy.
As the first trailer is revealed for Joel and Ethan Coen’s take on the tale that won John Wayne an Oscar in 1969, we should probably make something clear; this probably isn’t the True Grit that your dad loved.
Everybody loves a freebie. Just ask Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross. And whilst I wouldn’t say that ALL of the best things in life are free, The Scoop is offering something truly great. Outside film screenings. And I’ve got the windswept hair to prove it. So forget about the rubbish giveaways; like flyers through your letterbox, a dress ten sizes too small that your pal gave you because she lost weight, or the free drink that ain’t alcohol (yeah thanks) because this is GOOD stuff!!
Paul Greengrass’s Green Zone centres on one of the fundamental questions surrounding the Iraq war – when American and British forces withdraw completely from Iraq will the lasting legacy be peace and democracy? Or will it will be a deep-rooted suspicion that the infamous weapons of mass destruction, the supposed justification for the invasion, never existed? It’s an interesting question, though the answers in this film are perhaps just a little too easy.
Director Clint Eastwood has done it again with Invictus, a wonderfully uplifting film that follows the true story of Nelson Mandela’s quest to reuinte his fractured country through the peaceful bonds of of giant men bashing into each other.
