A surprise hit stateside when it displaced Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol from the top of the box office, The Devil Inside defied a near-universal critical mauling to find an audience. Released last week in U.K. theatres, one can only hope that British audiences are a little more discerning.

The great stones of BFF towers are looking sparse and sad today, mainly because resident guard-human Magda is nowhere to be found (she’s a danger to herself and others when she’s roused), and John’s chair keeps collapsing annoyingly/hilariously. Still, tis Orange Wednesday dammit, and the power of two for one MUST BE RESPECTED.

Anthony Hopkins and some chap you’ve never heard of star in a film which is stuck halfway between psychological thriller and demon-haunted horror. Solid performances and a refreshing rejection of SFX go some way towards redeeming this confused, lumpen effort, but it’s still a long way from being welcomed into the divine presence.
