Amour wins three at London Critics’ Circle film awards
Michael Haneke’s ode to love won three of the top prizes at the London Critics’ Circle film awards last night, including Film of the Year and Best Actress for Emmanuelle Riva. Haneke also won Screenwriter of the year for Amour. Other winners of the evening were Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress in Les Misérables and Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Best Actor prize for The Master.
In the British categories, Alice Lowe and Steve Oram were named breakthrough British film-makers for writing the screenplay to Ben Wheatley’s black comedy Sightseers, and favourite for the Bafta Rising Star Award, Andrea Riseborough, took British Actress of the Year.
Winner of last year’s Palme D’Or, Amour also has five Oscar nominations, including Best Actress, Best Film and Best Screenplay. It is also nominated for for Best Foreign Film, which is the most likely award it will be given the Academy’s track record in awarding foreign films (bar The Artist, of course). With the Golden Globes already handed out and still a few weeks before the Baftas on the 10th and the Oscars on the 24th, the London Critics’ Circle is a last chance for London’s critics to hand out awards to the really deserving films and give recognition to British films in particular.
