First teaser arrives for 1911

Jackie Chan’s running, jumping, climbing trees years are evidently behind him, and with the imminent release of his new film 1911 it seems he’s finally made the transition to cinematic elder statesman. Chan directs and stars in the mountain of Chinese propaganda epic, which has been produced to mark the centenary of the Xinhai Revolution – and, extraordinarily, is also his own hundredth film.

Well, obviously it looks gorgeous; slow-mo shrapnel, rippling flags and Jackie Chan in a peaked cap are and always have been the way to my heart. But “When an empire is torn between power and corruption”? We don’t want to come across all quoting Lord Acton here, but traditionally power and corruption have been pretty comfortable bedfellows. Maybe it makes more sense in Cantonese…
