Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman released as animated movie

If you’re not a comics fan, know this: All-Star Superman is the Eisner Award-winning and New York Times bestselling graphic novel by Grant Morrison. The hot movie news is that it’s just been turned into an animated superhero film scheduled for release on February 22 2011 in DVD and Blu-Ray.

Want to know who plays who? Voice actors include James Denton (Superman), Christina Hendricks (Lois Lane), Anthony LaPaglia (Lex Luthor) and Ed Asner (Perry White). Pop fact: James Denton also plays Terri Hatcher’s husband in Desparate Housewives and Hatcher has played Lois Lane… and so the circle turns! Albeit it turns through several realities, TV shows and movies like an Escher staircase.

Rather amusingly, Morrison had this to say of the film: “It took only a single viewing for All-Star Superman to become one of my all-time favourite superhero movies. The adaptation by Bruce, Dwayne and the team is quirky, epic and heartbreaking and I don’t think I’ve seen anything else quite like it. A triumph, as they say!”

The good news is that, horrific as the above appears on first reading, Morrison is the type to get his own jokes. Huzzah! And in actuality the movie probably will be rather good, as Morrison is noted for his skill in bringing fresh life to tired comic book characters and injecting fresh ideas into stale comic franchises.

Grant Morrison is as famous as Alan Moore (Watchmen) and Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) in the comics world. Last year, he made nationwide news for killing off Batman. Before that, he re-wrote the X-Men so they were cool again. He’s lauded as one of the most free-thinking comics creators at work today.

As a moviegoer you may not yet know Grant Morrison’s name. We’re willing to bet that – in a couple of years – you will.
