A lot of heavy hitters are coming our way in summer 2011, so give up on your tan (lets be honest, you’ve been a lost cause from the start) and throw away any sunny specs that aren’t 3D compatible – it’s cinema summer checklist time.

Mike Leigh has confounded all expectations by coming up with a multi-billion pound lump of shit with a real chasm splitting the middle of England and flying dwarves. One can only assume that… actually, no. Best assume nothing. To produce this grand guignol of nonsense, humanity must have been very, very bad.

After bloody years of speculation, Martin Freeman has finally been confirmed in the role of Bilbo for Peter Jackson’s much-delayed Hobbit project.

Hyper Japan, a three day “pop culture” event made its way to The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane last weekend. Imagine all things Japanese under a London roof; food, art, gaming, fashion and technology (I saw my first 3D telly!) and you’ve got something a bit like it. But I had no time for Japanese tomfoolery, I was there with a purpose. So I tore myself away from the manga illustrators and Japanese fashion show, slapped on my film hat and went to be wowed (and a bit weirded out) by the joy and absudity of anime.

So 2009’s Holmes certainly got the full Ritchie treatment – the question is, did it work? In our opinion, the result wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. Sure, there are a lot of action sequences, and the staid Holmes of old seems now to have morphed into a buff athlete and martial arts expert played by Robert Downey Jr. Yet despite this, we were hard-pressed to find a moment in the entire film where we weren’t either having a chuckle or glued to the screen.
