It’s been reported that Legendary Pictures – the company behind The Dark Knight and 300 -will be creating a new Godzilla flick, having reached a deal with rights owners Toho. The last time the scaly beast raised its infamous head was in 1998, in a fairly horrendous film by Roland Emmerich. However, it could be that the guys behind The Dark Knight have a bit more to offer. They’re certainly no strangers to creepy city shots and shadowy midnight battles.
Last week we reported that there’s a new Disney film in the works, a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty from the wicked witch’s POV. There was no name attached to the big bad part of Maleficent at the time, but it could be that the Queen of Hollywood herself, Angelina Jolie, might step up to play the role.
With the massive success of Wicked – the musical that tells The Wizard Of Oz from the Wicked Witch’s point of view, and the announcement that Disney plan to release a film about Malificent – the witch from Sleeping Beauty, it seems everyone wants to take a fresh look at an old tale. Screw the good guys, it’s all about the other side of the coin.
In American Football – the opening credits of The Blind Side inform us – the highest paid player is the Quarterback. The second highest player is the Left Tackle – as the first bill you pay might be the mortgage, but the second is always the insurance. Now for anyone not American (a spectrum that very much includes us), this poignant opening message is kind of lost. But what emerges in the preceding film is an uplifting true story that emphasizes a message of the importance of protection, loyalty and trust. Which we’re pretty sure is what the Left Tackle thing is about. Yeah, we totally speak Football!
Kick-down, touch-up and homoerotic falling down!
After the gross exercise in smug self-indulgence that was Kill Bill and the sadly inconsequential tackiness of Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino looks to be back on form in the utterly demented joy that is Inglourious Basterds.

She added “Sometimes you meet each other at a time in your lives when you’re not necessarily ready. Or you’re not fully formed and have the maturity it takes to be in a relationship.”

Cobain, the tortured genius behind Nirvana who killed himself in 1994 has become one of the most iconic figures in the history of angry, angry music. Valentine’s Day eh? There’s no getting away from the hatred of it. Either you’re not in a relationship and you’re sick of being reminded of the fact, or you are and you’re sick of being reminded that you’re not the lover you should be. It’s lose/lose. And no number of happy cuddly bears are going to change that. Nothing demonstrates this collective bitterness better than the natural reaction to Valentine’s Day – Garry Marshall’s sugar-coated tale of romance and heartbreak.
Oh dear, looks like the sequel to the movie of mad-cap racing cars is stuck at the starting-line. The release date of Cars 2 has been pushed back from June 2011 to December.
