It looks like John Carter is going to fall fast and land hard at the box office. Costing a cool $250 mill’ to make, based on a cherised collection of sci-fi novels, featuring the most sophisticated CGI Disney could afford and being the live action debut of director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E plus writing credits on the Toy Story trilogy), John Carter looked like a shoe-in to be one of the year’s toppermost earners. Right now it looks like breaking even worldwide would be a hopeful return. Which got us thinking….
This week, Reese stars in This Means War, a film where she forces two lifelong friends (and also… spies? Or something. I don’t know. Ask John.) to compete for her love, destroying one another in the process. Hang on a second, haven’t we seen this before? Y’know, Reese Witherspoon systematically ruining the lives of those around her? Let’s investigate.
Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, Margaret has been in production for nearly five years, delayed due to multiple set-backs arising from Lonergan’s stubborn pursuit of the elusive perfect cut (and further exasperated by multiple ongoing law suits), concluding in a limited release orchestrated by Fox Searchlight Pictures. With only a handful of showings across the country, Margaret may be the best film you never see this year.
Christmas exultation-ing taking its financial toll? Worrying about how many loved ones will be super-stoked about getting A Hug Voucher again this year? Screw them. It’s Wednesday. And on Wednesday, we celebrate the birth of another sacred vessel – that of Two For One Cinema. Praise Be!
Penguins! Hilarious, adorable penguins! If there’s penguins, this must be a good film, right? Only…why do the penguins dance? And sing? What is it all in aid of? If Happy Feet Two was actually a good film, you’d probably be able to put up with its directionless, occasionally very odd tone. But, as things stand, well it’s all just a bit of a wet fish in the face.
