When the announcement was made that the bloke who played Daredevil’s mate alongside Ben Affleck’s blind superhero, Jon Faverau was to direct Marvel’s Iron Man, nobody could have quite predicted it would be the best comic book adaptations since Bryan Singer’s X2.
The first Iron Man was the surprise hit of 2008 and propelled Robert Downey Jr back into super-stardom. It was the first movie from Marvel Studios, the Marvel comic group’s own production company, and was hailed as a huge success. So just two years after the first movie, Robert Downey Jr is back as the eccentric billionaire Tony Stark. But is the sequel any good? Well, no. Not really.
It’s a prospect that will have comic book fans salivating everywhere: Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator and geek god Joss Whedon is in final talks to direct Marvel’s The Avengers. This is a superhero film of such potential epicness it’s making us here at Best For Film feel very dizzy. In a good way.
Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Jon Favreau is released in May 2010 and looks to build on the success of 2008’s Iron Man. The latest trailer was released on March 7th and looks epic. Joining Downey Jr are Don Cheadle as War Machine, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer and Mickey Rourke as main villan Whiplash. Sad news for a lot of comic book fans here. On New Year’s Eve, The Disney Corporation (boo, hiss, etc.) officially took over Marvel Entertainment, the company responsible for Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man and a bevy of other superhero franchises.
Well, pretty much. Lately, it seems like you can’t go two minutes without some Hollywood star-or-other announcing they’re set to appear in Thor, the upcoming film of the popular Marvel strip. With with so many names being bandied about we thought it was high time someone sat down and collated all the info together.
