When the film Adulthood was released in UK cinemas in June 2008, its opening weekend grossed more money than the freshly released Sex and the City. In the wake of its success, a spate of new and gritty urban films has been drawing audiences to cinemas in increasing numbers, with films such as Shank and Dead Man Running bringing new vigor to the UK film industry. Despite their success, though, the issue of black representation is never far away. With a panel debate titled “The New Blaxploitation?” taking place as a part of London’s Across the Street, Around the World festival, Best For Film went to investigate.

With the fourth installment in Wes Craven’s Scream saga due next year, it seemed that this franchise – like its protagonist, Sidney Prescott – would not be one easily killed off. And now it appears that its life has been prolonged even more, with the director openly admitting that screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, launched this latest film with a second trilogy in mind.

Given its title because its anti-heroes like to take things (told you it wasn’t a thinker), the plot follows a gang of bank robbers as they plan a $30 million heist, unaware that a hard-boiled detective is closing in on them, determined to crack the case. What results is a dodgy pastiche of crime films everywhere – fun in places, but ultimately brainless.

With Zack Snyder confirmed to direct Superman: Man of Steel, rumours have now started rolling in about the film’s plot details. But could it be that Snyder wasn’t chosen for his vision, but for his ability to work faster than a speeding bullet?

Well, it seems those rumours were wrong; Emma Stone will not be playing Mary Jane Watson. She will, however, be playing Gwen Stacy! Does that make sense? Our brains hurt.

The latest offering from Paul Andrew Williams (known for 2006’s London to Brighton), it would be difficult to describe Cherry Tree Lane as the sort of film anybody would watch for enjoyment. The story of a London couple held hostage in their own home by some seriously disgruntled youths, it is uncomfortable viewing from start to finish; rarely has there been a film that could make you feel more horrified at what is happening onscreen. You won’t want to watch and yet, curiously, this is precisely why you must.

Featuring dramatic testimony from the men who were there and using rare footage from the Division’s own film archives, The Real Band of Brothers offers a captivating inside view of armed conflict – but the lack of a firm relation to the Steven Spielberg tele-drama may leave some viewers disappointed.
