With the massive success of Wicked – the musical that tells The Wizard Of Oz from the Wicked Witch’s point of view, and the announcement that Disney plan to release a film about Malificent – the witch from Sleeping Beauty, it seems everyone wants to take a fresh look at an old tale. Screw the good guys, it’s all about the other side of the coin.

Disney are planning to make a movie from the point of view of the ultimate bad-gal – Maleficent, the woman who curse the beautiful dozy maiden Sleeping Beauty to sleep forever. And she turns into a dragon quite a lot, which is also pretty bad-ass. It’s sounds very Wicked to us (ie the musical that tells The Wizard Of Oz from the wicked witch’s point of view. Not that we’ve seen it. Or own the soundtrack.)

God, life is rubbish isn’t it? It’s cold, you’re unattractive, that umbrella you nicked has been nicked off you (how dare they) and you’re really really unattractive.At least we can count on Disney – unstoppable global terror that it is – to provide us with some respite. But even big dog Disney needs inspiration. And a lot of the time, inspiration comes from existing tales, from history, from myths, from life itself. Paramount have announced their reboot of Footloose is no more. Seems they’re finally listening to the public’s cries of “Dear God, no more remakes!” Either that or both their star director and lead actor have dropped out.

Bill Bailey goes all-out musical in this new DVD, recruiting the entire Albert Hall symphony orchestra to assist him in his mad, amusing rambles. Taking a tour of the entire orchestra, Bailey drags in everything from the sound of trombones, jellyfish, the Doctor Who theme tune, Bach and Motzart. It’s a huge show – easily Bailey’s biggest – and while his trademark wit and surrealism still sparkle, the massive repetition of material sadly bogs down this release.
