It may be strange to think it, but in an age where we’re so used to 3D creatures, pixilated flying houses and talking toys, a 2D film can be considered pushing the boundaries of today’s kids entertainment. Gone is the golden age of Disney classics- The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin – all-singing, all dancing, all bloomin’ marvelous. Today what kids want is explosions, nifty special effects and some smooth-talking robots, right?
Before we all burst into tears (of joy or despair, depending on your love of sparkles), we have to tell you that a Glee film is not definitely in the making, only that certain facts about the Glee cast’s contracts have come to light. It turns out that those sneaky critters at Fox (cunning as a?) thought very carefully about this franchise before they got their cast to sign on the dotted line, as they are all locked in for three feature films if the company so wishes.
Confirmation! It has this morning been announced that directors Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry will be co-ordinating the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony. Daldry will be in overall creative charge of ceremonies while Boyle will be artistic director of the opening ceremony itself. Bring it on!
Though it’s not going to be opening in the UK until August, Shrek 4 has topped the US chart in its opening weekend, knocking off Iron Man 2 from the number one spot. However, its not taken anywhere near the amount Shrek 3 raked in – just $71.2 million in comparison with $121 million.
Drew Barrymore has cast an interested eye over a project entitled Surrender Dorothy, in which a young girl discovers she is the great, great granddaughter of Dorothy. She finds her ruby red slippers and must use them to stop the Wicked Witch of the West from seizing control of Earth and Oz. Apparently Drew first thought to play the lead herself, but its now looking like she’s more interested in directing – a smart move considering the strength of her directorial debut Whip It.
First they released Alvin and the Chipmunks, a horrifically high-pitched cacophony of holiday season ‘fun’. With kids flocking to the cinemas in droves, the inevitable follow-up, painfully labelled ‘The Squeakquel’ materialised in late 2009. Following the DVD marketing mantra of “everyone loves a film series packaged in the same box with loads of extras” to the letter, the unavoidable ‘Double Trouble’ has surfaced, breaking the record for “the biggest piece of crap to ever be released in a two-disc box set”.
You don’t need us to tell you this was never going to be a good film. The title alone is enough to not only toy with your upchuck reflex, but also cause you to file this one away to the ‘only if I’m stuck on babysitting duty’ box. Still, we live in an age where kids’ films are fast becoming an art form all their own – from Up to Where the Wild Things Are, this year’s family offerings have allowed us all to shamelessly enjoy ourselves at the cinema with the under 10s. So perhaps some out there among you are curious whether The Squeakquel could rise to the occasion?
Does the idea of an a cappella “Don’t Stop Believing” turn your stomach, or fill it with butterflies? Your answer to this digestive conundrum will probably reveal your attitude to Glee; the US’s latest TV phenomenon. Like it or loathe it, there’s no denying that Glee – a musical sitcom set in a US high school – has whipped up a storm over the last few months with its catchy tunes, day-glo characters and ridiculously addictive plot-lines. Can you help but sing along?
Could it be? Kevin Bacon back in our hearts, where he belongs? Maybe not. But the story that made him famous; that of a teenager who discovers that his new hometown has outlawed rock music and dancing, might very well be back on our screens. And who’s heading it up? Non other than Black Snake Moan’s Craig Brewer.
Well, that’s a rather interesting change of direction. Earlier in the year we reported that Emma Thompson was writing a re-make of the Audrey Hetburn classic My Fair Lady, but back then the front runner for the main role was Keira Knightley. It seems like since then it’s been all change, and now the lucky lady is non other than Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan. And the world can let out a sigh of relief.
