Supervillain flick Despicable Me has knocked The Twilight Saga: Eclipse from the top of the US box office chart with an evil laugh-worthy $60m opening week.

It may be strange to think it, but in an age where we’re so used to 3D creatures, pixilated flying houses and talking toys, a 2D film can be considered pushing the boundaries of today’s kids entertainment. Gone is the golden age of Disney classics- The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin – all-singing, all dancing, all bloomin’ marvelous. Today what kids want is explosions, nifty special effects and some smooth-talking robots, right?

T-Rex was right, the British love to boogie, and not just on a Saturday night. For the past two years, the winners of the top-rated ITV1 series Britain’s Got Talent have been dance acts George Sampson and Diversity respectively. BBC One and Sky1 have wooed viewers with rival shows So You Think You Can Dance and Just Dance in addition to old stalwart Strictly Come Dancing, and cinema audiences have got their groove on to Step Up, Stomp The Yard, Make It Happen and Fame. Directors Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini celebrate the inventiveness of UK street dance in the first live action feature film to be shot entirely in 3D outside of America.

After one weekend the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake has made more than $30 million, and, like an inevitable storm of inevitability, a sequel is already being planned in… yes, you guessed it… 3D.

Poor old Ridley Scott. He’s spending all his time out and about promoting this new Robin Hood movie he’s made with Russell Crow, but all anyone wants to ask him about is the Alien prequel. And now he’s saying the prequel will have a sequel!

Apple has been developing 3D polarized glasses to allow people to watch 3D movies on the move. So if you thought that watching 2D films on your iPod and iPhone just doesn’t cut the mustard anymore you’ll soon be able to upgrade to a brand new pair of iSpecs.

Clash of the Titans is a remake of the 1981 classic of the same name, and tells the tale of the legendary Greek hero Perseus. Perseus (Sam Worthington) is the son of Zeus, but he’s been living the life of a fisherman down on Earth, unaware of his divine heritage. Perseus’ adopted family are killed by the evil god Hades and he vows revenge. Hades tells the King of Argos that unless he sacrifices his daughter Andromache to the gods, the Kraken will destroy the city, so Perseus and a rag-tag bunch of misfits set off on a quest to find three legendary witches who can tell them how to defeat the monster.

The Hollywood assault upon 3D cinema looks set to continue unabated (this time with added bite) as former stuntman David R. Ellis announces that he has signed up to direct forthcoming horror film Shark Night 3D. The title, which leaves little to the imagination, will no doubt be looking to avoid comparisons with the film so bad that the use of 3D in cinema was shelved for 20 years, 1983’s universally-panned Jaws 3-D.

It looks like your classic David vs Goliath knife-fight is on this Halloween, with both Saw VII and Paranormal Activity 2 coming out on the 22nd October.
