Larry Charles’s outrageously offensive, all-guns-blazing comedy isn’t so much a sharp satire as an exercise in eccentric crassness. Lacking the edge of Borat and Brüno, The Dictator is nonetheless a disconcertingly amusing, predictably gross-out affair, packed full of memorable moments and reliant almost solely upon a central performance from everyone’s favourite master of grotesquerie, Sacha Baron Cohen.
Yes, probably. Except they’ll both be pretending to be different people. Acting, innit?
Immortals is out, and that’s as good a reason as any to get so drunk that you start calling your wedding tackle ‘Poseidon’ and telling it you’ll sacrifice a white bull to it just as soon as one trots out of the sea. Make sure you don’t substitute another bull, though, or your testicles might turn into a MInotaur. Or something. Can you tell that we’ve already started drinking?
The lunatics are taking over the asylum, or that’s what Martin Scorsese’s impeccably crafted Shutter Island would have us believe. But then perception and reality are completely blurred in this 1950s-set mystery, adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis from the best-seller by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone).
