We’re at the point now where, to a certain extent, we know what to expect from Wes Anderson. A charming screenplay, delightful production design, exquisitely composed cinamatography, and a barrel of actors we all wish we could take out for gin. The Grand Budapest Hotel delivers on all counts, as we knew it would, but…

It’s that time of year again! As the seasons turn, our adamant gaze pierces the mists of the future to tell you what you should be seeing next year. And, as usual, it’s mostly superheroes (not our fault the interesting little indie films don’t publicise themselves a year in advance, is it?). This year’s list is in order of release rather than assumed quality, because we keep putting crap films in the top 5 and then regretting it.

Glasses. They’re weird, aren’t they? Bits of plastic or glass slapped over your stupid face that either serve a purpose by bending light in the exact way that your warped and pathetic eyeballs fail to do, or they serve no purpose other than to obscure your epidermis. Why would anyone bother compiling a list of glasses? Because we’re Best For Film AND THAT’S HOW WE ROLL.

This week’s movie releases includes the Jack Black helmed Bernie. The reappearance of this lovably rotund gentleman got us thinking: what do we really know about this intrepid comedian? True his name has been a familiar sight to us for a number of years now but does that mean we actually have a line on the man that lies behind it? Probably not! So here it is! A nice compact little compilation of facts that will come to the rescue in any given Jack Black-related situation. No, no, no need to thank us! It was our pleasure!

Our least regular feature is back! This week’s Favourite Flicks author is Nina, whose whimsical aesthetic makes her choice of film laughably unsurprising. If you love Wes Anderson’s classic The Royal Tenenbaums, then you’re amongst friends here – if you’re not, prepare to be converted by a gentle barrage of Gene Hackman, Bill Murray and the whole damn Tenenbaum dynasty.

Last we heard from the prickly pen of Noah Baumbach, he had joined forces with Ben Stiller to bring us Greenberg. The chronicle of a man who resolved to do nothing, insult everyone, and miraculously seduce Greta Gerwig, as lovable grumps go it certainly pushed the envelope. What has the Baumer been up to of late? Why, reuniting with Stiller on Madagascar 3, released this week. Here’s the skinny on the alternative’s alternative to Wes Anderson.
