We can’t help but notice that Hollywood loves to up the explosion-and-sex factor with Britain’s classic literature. One only needs to look at the bare chest of Robert Downey Jr as the new Sherlock Holmes to see that the silver screen doesn’t mind taking a few liberties. But what other classic-but-uncool tales are Hollywood missing out on? We re-imagine some great British classics the way Spielberg would do ’em…

Jack Black and Michael Cera go through the motions in this pre-historic comedy. The touch of producer Judd Apatow is clear to see, but sadly this film lacks the magic of his classics such as The 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up. Instead, we are treated to an hour and a half of poo jokes, Jack Black’s comedy faces and a rambling trip around the bible. We deserve better than this.

Following the success of his 2008 DVD- Michael McIntyre Live and Laughing, this offering is packed with just as much fast paced hilarity. For avid followers of the posh Prince of comedy this DVD will not disappoint, it’s packed with McIntyre’s wonderful observations on life. However, if you’re trying to convert a non-believer we would steer clear and go for something a little more universal.

An action packed yet rather fluffy CGI-romp from Dreamworks. Aliens are attacking, and the only ones who can beat them are monsters imprisoned by the government. For the wee ones, the in-jokes, great graphics and cameo appearances will be enough to satisfy, but if you’re looking for something with a bit more heart, we’d recommend the meatier offerings from Disney/Pixar.

They’ll be there for you… all ten seasons of them in one handy collection. Although it’s been 4 years since the final episode of Friends aired, there seems to be no end in sight for the popularity of this cultural phenomenon. And to be honest, we can see why. Brilliant writing, characters you can’t help but fall in love with, and a theme tune that somehow never gets annoying. Even now it’s a great Christmas present, and we’ll probably be saying the same thing next year.

Call us crazy, but we thought Christmas was the time for good cheer? There’s not much to be cheerful about in this dark adaptation of the Dickens classic. With pacey action and good performances there is still something to enjoy, but if we’re honest, at Christmas we just want to leave the cinema with sleighbells in our ears and a smile on our faces.

The comedy phenomenon of Peep Show first hit our screens back in 2003, and it’s difficult to remember what filled our lives with such joy before it came along. Six series in and still as strong as ever, Peep Show truly is a programme that makes you proud to be British. Awkwardly, embarrassingly and pathetically British, but British all the same.

With millions of kids around the world getting a taste for blood, there’s never been a better time for vampiric stories to be transferred to the big screen. However, we can’t help feeling that with confusing storytelling and lack of energy, this one lacks bite.

When you realise you can’t remember any characters in this classic film- unless you count the car, which we do- it could be time to give modern living a time out, and your brain a good seeing to.
